LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the epidemiological and biological relationship between COPD and lung cancer, including shared risk factors and mechanisms beyond tobacco exposure.

  2. Identify patients with COPD who may be at increased risk for lung cancer and appropriate candidates for lung cancer screening.

  3. Integrate lung cancer screening discussions into COPD management using patient-centered, evidence-based communication approaches.

  4. Recognize common barriers to lung cancer screening among patients with COPD and identify practical strategies to support timely referral and uptake.

  5. Utilize available clinical tools and resources, including a clinician-facing infographic, to support screening decisions and care coordination.

MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Joshua Wald, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Joshua Wald is a respirologist at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health in Hamilton, Ontario where his clinical and research work is focused on pulmonary rehabilitation and comprehensive care for patients with COPD. His work is focused around education and advocacy for those living with chronic lung disease. He is program director of the McMaster adult respirology training program and the past co-chair of the Canadian Thoracic Society assembly on COPD steering committee.

Christian Finley, MD, MPH, FRCS (c)

Dr. Christian Finley is a thoracic surgeon at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, and a professor in the Department of Surgery (Division of Thoracic Surgery) at McMaster University. He is the Lung Cancer Lead at the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership and is the Clinical Lead for Lung Cancer Screening for Ontario. He is also an advisor on lung cancer screening for the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. Dr. Finley co-founded and led the national quality improvement project for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Finley has led many initiatives that have won awards for quality and patient-centered care.
